Due to the preparation for final examination, we decided to reduce Judo practice to three times a week. Considering Prof. Otsuki worried whether it will be alright or not regarding our members’ credit in the university, it may well be important to perform well in the university. As the breeze of summer bear humidity and the beating sun have put us all on edge these days, it is getting more rigorous to practice Judo every day. Yet, no matter how harsh the circumstances, it is clear that our morale stands resolute. Today we received the honor to learn from Judo master Nose, and coach Nakata. Today’s menu was as same as always in that it is balanced with Tachiwaza and Randori.

In the idouchikomi session, we tried to connect Ashiwaza to each one’s favorite Judo skill. During the Randori, by using Hikikomi, we tried to utilize Newaza actively. Coach Nakata instructed that though it is hard to concentrate on practice in this hot weather, we have to concentrate on each bout of Randori to avoid injury. In addition, even if we get the point through Nagewaza, the competition is not over until the judge declares our victory, so we have to assault the opponent with Newaza even after the success of Nagewaza. He also added that from the start to the end of each bout, we must greet each other with proper manners.

Since this is the period of transition from international rule to Sansho rule, we are trying to strengthen the connection from Tachiwaza to Newaza, and Hikikomi is one of the most popular skills to connect both. After the Randori there was lesson from Judo master Nose and Coach Nakata. From Coach Nakata, we learned how to swoop the opponent swiftly with various Kumite. From Judo master Nose, we learned Sumigaeshi and hikikomigaeshi on the continuous way from coach’s lesson. We are so grateful to two teachers today for providing this great lesson in need. We are going to master these lessons by practicing them and I hope we will be able to use these skills in the competitions following.

Judo master Nose said, as we have more than 15 members in the club we can think of various strategies for the Sanshodaisen. He also said that it is important to understand the history of Hitotsubashi Judo. He said that this understanding is possible by understanding background history from Kodokan rule to Shichitei rule and Sansho rule. I believe that through Judo, not only are we learning Judo as martial art but also we are participating the great history with honor and glory.
