Pearls of perspiration streamed down our cheeks as we went through our usual opening routines; fatigue piled up into an escalating crescendo as we finally entered our sparring rounds. The nagging heat alone was not enough to douse our fighting spirit though – it is probably true, what they say, that “what does not kill you makes you stronger” – for we were fully focused in both mind and spirit, on the coming competition on Sunday.
When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.
The heat is on.
Doubtless, results are not all there is to any sport, particularly the simultaneously physical and philosophical art of Judo, but it is equally unequivocal that it is these milestones that allow us to take stock of how much we have progressed, how far we have come, and how much more ground there is left to cover.
And fight we will, not just to prove anything to anybody, but to put all that we have learnt so far to the test, and most importantly, have no regrets.
