Today’s practice was a continuation of the training sessions geared towards new students and part of our overall schedule of new member recruitment. (新歓) To be honest, having arrived to Hitotsubashi last winter I was unaware that clubs and circles in Japan go to such great lengths to attract new members but I am glad to be here during this momentous time of year.
Speaking of momentous, today we were joined by Yamagishi Senpai, who took time out of his busy schedule to help us with training. Though a prior engagement left him with too little time show us full techniques, his participation and advice during sparring and technique practice is always an invaluable asset to members new and old.

The ever elusive Yamagishi Senpai:

One thing that amazed me about Judo club is the willingness of experienced members to share their knowledge with beginners that join the club. When I joined the club six months ago, I received a tremendous amount of advice and encouragement from fellow teammates and I see that is no different with the members that are thinking of joining this semester. I am sure if they choose to commit to Judo they will gain incredible strength through the unique camaraderie of our club.

Chee How and Shinohe Kun diligently explain the finer details of Judo to a new student:

A day of training cannot be complete without sparring and today both of our new members Suzuki Kun and Aoki Kun showed some of their skills on the ground training with some of the older members of the club. I personally had a chance to train with Suzuki Kun and with the strength, experience and composure I felt from when he trains, it’s hard to believe he just is a first year student. His addition to the club is sure to make an impact at major tournaments this year.

Not to be outdone, today I worked with Dominic, whom I introduced to the club earlier this week. Though he is a beginner at Judo, he has been working diligently at mastering all the moves we have shown him. Today we focused on some the essentials of Judo including Ukemi (受け身)、O-sotogari(大外刈)、the armlock(十字固め)、back choke(絞め技) and defense from the turtle (亀) position. Even with no martial arts background Dominic’s quick progress shows just how friendly this sport is to beginners. Having such a sturdy build and now that the Judo bug has bit him, I am sure he will be able to make great progress before returning home.

Well that’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed this blog and if you want to actually try your hand at this amazing sport we are always waiting for you at the Judo Dojo in Hitotsubashi University!
Best regards,
Sanni Wehbe・Exchange Student
