Being one of the nicest days in terms of weather since I came to Japan, I was very excited to come to practice after my part-time job today. When I arrived, both Dominic and Mika were already engaged in sparring and seemed to be having a lot of fun doing so. When I see them train nowadays, it surprises me that they started Judo less than a month ago. While Dominic has taken a liking for standing techniques, such as Sasaetsurigoshi(支え釣り込み腰) and Obi Tori Gaeshi(帯取り返し), Mika has been practicing his ground work(寝技) and already can pull off a flying armbar(飛び付き十字固め) and back chokes(絞め技) in live training. Since I was the one that introduced them to the club, I am extremely happy that they have taken a serious commitment to their Judo training. If I don’t watch out I might be the one learning from them soon! haha

After practice I began my now daily routine of preparing for the Black Belt Test(昇段試験) which will take place this Sunday May 12, 2013. Aikawa kun will be taking the test with me so we both have been practicing the traditional forms(形) that we will have to do under the tutelage of Maruyama Senpai. After several days of practice, I have now essentially gotten the basics down but there is still more work to do in order for me to really master each move. Doing this practice has taught me that in order to truly become a real Judo player rather than simply just focusing on obtaining victory, you must have respect for your opponent, as well as be aware every detail of each move to be successful. There is still one more practice session before my test and I intend to use the knowledge I have gained in the past year and become a Black Belt before I go back to America!
