Today’s practice was our first back after a week of two a day sessions to welcome the new freshmen into our club.（新歓合宿） Having participated in the training camp for 三商戦 (our big tournament in the fall) when I first entered the club, I know how tiring these two a day sessions can be for new members but I also know how essential they were for helping me build camaraderie with my teammates and the love for Judo that I have now. As everybody returned to practice today after a well-deserved Sunday off, the results of this training camp were apparent. Everybody from the 1st years to the international students in our club were fired up increasing the heat in the Dojo that the warm summer weather has brought upon us.
Today’s training consisted of the normal menu of warm ups（準備体操), drills（打ち込み） and sparring （乱取り）, however the intensity of practice was much higher than usual making me realize something about not only my Judo but also about our club as a whole. We have made progress. In the past month and a half since I have returned to training I made a promise to myself that I would train hard to improve my standing techniques (立ち技) so that I can actually be a real opponent for my training partners during sparring and the results of are finally starting to pay off. I can finally use techniques (that my teammates helped me hone) such as Haraigoshi（払腰）,Uchimata（内股） and Kosotogari（小外刈） to score ippon（一本） during sparring. (Sorry guys!) haha
But it is not just me who’s improving. Dominic, Mika, Saito Kun who were beginners that joined this semester are already readily participating in sparring and even frustrating some of the older members of the club who are impressed with their amazing growth. Adding to the fact that the super strong 1st year team of Hagi kun, Suzuki Kun and Aoki Kun have joined the club, this insurmountable progress by the new members has undoubtedly given our already powerful team of 2nd and 3rd years the strength it needs to be triumphant 三商戦 later this fall. And even though we (Me, Mika and Dominic) are going to be leaving in a few months we are glad to lend a hand in training as long as you guys keep teaching us!
Although Saito-Kun was craving Soba, the store we wanted to go was closed and we ended up having dinner at our favorite, すた丼！笑
Until next time,
